HowTo Use Body Language Tricks During An Interview

HowTo Use Body Language Tricks During An Interview

In this article we have decided to share with you  some tips on how to create a stronger rapport with an interviewer. The techniques presented are also good practices for bridging and ice-breaking. To illustrate the term rapport in this context – now just think at that experience when you are in a conversation with someone and somehow you both have the feeling that you are in sync and on the same wavelength – understanding perfectly each other on all levels. For example try to remember now, those moments when you were in the company of your best friends and you had that deep feeling that often you understand each other without even talking or explaining a point too much – you know – that special chemistry. The fundamental element that leads to creating rapport is matching and mirroring. Let’s imagine for a second that you are in a conversation with the prospective employer in his office. Try to be aware of things like her/his body posture & movements, the breathing rate and of course the ones voice tempo. Immediately after you become aware of these elements you have got to launch the synchronization process. Mirror the body posture (yeah – exactly! I have meant that literally, try to match/mirror their position). If X is crossing the arms – copy that position, if X has a specific voice tone – match it. Oh, yes of course you must do these things discreetly. Leave a pause before matching their movements or body posture because otherwise you are risking to have a negative reaction (even it is at their subconscious level), rather than rapport. One of the most efficient techniques of creating rapport is mirroring ones breathing rate. Try to synchronize your breathing rate consciously and continuously and you will see the effect taking place.

Well, now you might ask yourself – so what’s in it for me? The answer is that this kind of small tricks will help you to create a sensation of mutual understanding and generate a pleasant and positive atmosphere between you and the potential employer. That will not give you an ultimate guarantee for success, but will enhance your chances for getting an amazing outcome. Obviously, you have got to do your homework and prepare a nice CV but it is also important to be aware of such techniques that are of great help, especially for PR professionals. Good luck and keep trying.
